Culture and Conservation
A UNESCO Protected Landscape
Sian Ka’an means “Origin of the Sky.” The UNESCO World Heritage property protects tropical forest, mangroves, marshes, lagoons, coastline, and marine habitat near Tulum.
More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the reserve. You may also see fish, butterflies, reptiles, and other wildlife during the experience, although sightings are never guaranteed.
The Muyil archaeological site lies near the northern portion of the reserve and reflects the area’s long history of Maya settlement and regional trade.
