How to Get to Tulum from Cancun

In order to get to Tulum, you would need to fly to Cancun Airport (CUN) and either take the bus, taxi, or private transfer to Tulum. The Cancun to Tulum distance is around 81 miles, while the distance from Cancun Airport to Tulum is slightly shorter, 73 miles. It takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to drive from Cancun Airport to Tulum, and 1 hour and 40 minutes to drive from Downtown Cancun to Tulum.

TAKING THE BUS

If you’re comfortable sharing open transportation with others, we recommend the ADO bus. The pick-up is outside the airport and costs around $10 – $15 USD one way.  The only way to purchase bus tickets is in person at the station unless you are a Mexican resident with a Mexican credit card to purchase through the ADO website. There is a stop over at Playa del Carmen and you would need to transfer buses. The entire ordeal will take approximately 2 hours 10 minutes or a bit more, depending on traffic and layover time.

TAKING THE AIRPORT TAXI

So-called regular taxis ARE NOT able to pick up passengers at the Cancun Airport but a taxi-like service is available for passengers going to any location in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. This service is available 24 hours and rates are calculated according to the distance to your destination. We don’t recommend this option due to numerous scams and price hikes to visitors. It’s best to book your airport transfers in advance to avoid scams.

RENTING A CAR

Cancun Airport is has a large selection of rental car companies in the area. Services are available 24 hours with a confirmed reservation. It is HIGHLY recommended that you make a reservation prior to your arrival to Cancun. You can book with our partner here with competitive pricing. Beware of agencies operating directly at the airport with their fees, can be 50% more than what is quoted initially at booking.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

It is very easy to get to the Cancun International Airport. There is one MAIN Road (Carretera) going North and South from the Airport. Carretera Cancun-Chetumal 307 is a coastal road connecting the whole Yucatan Peninsula. To get to the Cancun Airport you either go South if you are in Cancun or North if you are in Tulum, Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen. The Cancun Airport is located at kilometer 22 and the exit to the airport is clearly marked from Carretera 307.

AIRPORT PARKING

There is parking available at all terminals. Make sure you pay your ticket at the automated kiosk inside the terminals.
